I am the project manager for the Wittel Farm in Elizabethtown. This year, we are growing 2 acres of produce for food relief in Lancaster County. This is a project of Hunger free Lancaster County and the Lutheran Camping Corporation (which own the property). We have planted over 1,000 vegetable plants. (Tomatoes, cukes, peppers, green beans). We have planted 1/4 acre of squashes, an acre of sweet corn, and 1/4 acre of pumpkins, too. We anticipate an abundant harvest in late July through September. All of the produce will be received by Lancaster Council of Churches or Central PA food bank for distribution through the charitable food relief network in Lancaster county. To celebrate the first fruitful year, we will have a fall harvest at the farm in October.
Volunteers are invited to come out to the farm on Wednesdays from 10 am to 3 pm. Next week we will be staking tomato plants and pulling weeds. We may be watering plants, too. There is work for every age level, adults and kids. We encourage you to bring hoes, spades, watering cans, and garden gloves.
Starting on July 16th, we will have work at the farm on Saturdays, too.
If you are interested in helping at the farm, please email me. If you would like to bring a group out to help on a day other than Wednesday or Saturday- or in an evening- let me know. We may accommodate you, if there is work to do.
Hope to see you at the farm!
